“It's not where you started, it's where you're going that matters”
Im beginning to hate this dude |
Familiar?
Full of crap. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to escape this infamous tagline that appears to be literally everywhere. Not only has it made its way to my Hotmail inbox but also in my default webpage, Cebu Pacific’s online booking website. These words are even plastered in every nook and cranny of Makati’s CBD underpasses. Get the picture?
How would you feel if you were able to get your career-frustrated, unemployed-since-out-of-college, chillax friend a job at the Company you’ve been aspiring to work for?.. but not yourself?
Bittersweet. Perhaps today is the first time I’m going to associate myself with such adjective ‘cus frankly, I’m usually just bitter. On one hand, I can’t believe I actually played a role in helping someone penetrate an industry far related from her college degree. But then again, I just can’t help my poor self from flipping the other side of the coin. For crying out loud, I have an IT-related course with 1 year+ of not-so-related working experience under my belt and I dont even get that chance? This fact (reminds me) makes me feel more miserable and frustrated than I already am.
It’s not where you started, really?
*here comes the best part*
How come you bluntly rejected someone’s application because his 20 months working experience falls between under and over your criteria?
REJECTED* | OVERQUALIFIED | UNDERQUALIFIED |
Position | Associate Software Engineer** (general entry level) | Software Engineer |
Qualification | 0-12 months ONLY | AT LEAST 24 months |
**even if he was willing to disregard his prior working exp just so he could start over here
So to sum it up, your company would prefer people with unrelated college degrees as long as they have no working experience over IT degree holders with unrelated working experience. Right?
Some say it’s about timing. Some say it’s about luck. But in this company?
What do you think?
